Mark Shapiro leads The Cecilia Chorus of New York with orchestra in the first-ever Carnegie Hall performance of American composer Margaret Bonds’s 1954 The Ballad of the Brown King, a cantata featuring text from Langston Hughes’s poem Epiphany, written specifically for Bonds. The performance also includes a 50-minute “vest-pocket" Messiah.
